The Kentucky Reading Research Center’s 2026 Fiscal Year Annual Report highlights a productive year spent expanding research, resources, and partnerships to help Kentucky strengthen literacy instruction and improve reading outcomes for students.
A central focus this year was understanding how statewide literacy investments are working in schools. Our evaluation of the Read to Achieve Reading Diagnostic and Intervention Grant program examined 149 RTA-funded schools, combining educator perspectives with classroom observations and interviews. The findings underscore the importance of strong school-wide literacy systems, effective use of student data, professional learning, and stable, experienced educators.
We also analyzed statewide data on LETRS professional learning and found that schools with higher percentages of LETRS-trained teachers had significantly stronger gains in student reading proficiency. Together, these studies are helping Kentucky better understand what supports effective literacy instruction and where additional support is needed.
Other highlights from the year include:
- 5,000+ educators and school leaders in 149 Kentucky counties and school districts reached through conferences and other professional gatherings;
- Dozens of resources in our Research Clearinghouse translating research into practical guidance for educators, families, and decision-makers—resulting in more than 100,000 website views; and
- A partnership with the University of Kentucky Education SimLab exploring mixed-reality simulations that allow pre-service teachers to rehearse evidence-based literacy instruction and receive feedback before bringing new practices into their classrooms.
As Kentucky continues its work to strengthen reading instruction, we’re honored to be a part of that effort. We look forward to continuing our efforts in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education, policymakers and education leaders, educators, and families across the Commonwealth.
